Impotence – Myths and Realities
In ever culture across the world, men are measured against their strength, stamina, endurance and sexuality. Legends and myths exist in all cultures around the world about men with superhuman strength and virility. Mythical characters with seemingly boundless physical prowess exist in all folklore. Man is so preoccupied with sex that very often even gods are shown to exhibit enduring sexual virility. With sex playing such an integral part of every culture, it is of little surprise that men have always wanted to be the best in bed. Every culture prides in its heroes, who more often than not, are sexual powerhouses. Stories of these heroes are passed around and told to children at a very young age and they grow up wanting to be like these heroes. In this kind of a mindset, one can well imagine the havoc impotence can cause. A decreased libido in a man is seen as his complete loss of identity. Whenever people hear of a man who has suffered from a loss of libido, that man is automatically looked down upon and jokes are cracked at his expense. Society does not treat such men suffering from a loss of libido, or from impotence, very kindly.
The condition of impotence carries with it many myths. The flames of ignorance are fanned and prejudices set in. A decreased libido or a loss of libido is not the same thing as impotence. If a man is unable to have a successful and sexually gratifying sexual encounter, it does not automatically qualify him as being impotent. There are many reasons why a man can suffer from a loss of libido. Stress and tension in a man’s life is the primary killer of a libido. This stress and tension could manifest itself in many ways. The pressures of work in modern times, is enough to make a man lose his sex drive and rob him of his libido. This works in a vicious circle. If a man suffers from a loss of libido, it could lead to him slipping into a state of depression. This depression could, in turn, lead to impotence. Depression, guilt and anxiety are all reasons for a decreased libido. Man is not a machine. There is a belief across cultures, that a man is always ready for sex, at any place and any time. Men take pride in propagating this notion. When a man fails to rise to the occasion, he is automatically seen as an aberration. A sense of panic sets in. the man becomes depressed and cannot understand it. This just makes matters worse and leads to a greater loss of libido and even impotence.
The reality is that a decreased libido affects a majority of the male population, worldwide. This condition is mostly temporary and can be treated by regular exercise and keeping the body fit. If stress and tension is eliminated, or at least minimized, this condition can be reversed.
