Impotence : Causes and Solutions

Sexuality | November 27th, 2009

Impotence affects a vast majority of men. This is a fact, a fact, which a vast majority of men refuse to accept. Studies have shown that almost all men, at some point in time in their lives, have experienced an episode of a declining libido. This loss of libido, thankfully, is not the same thing as impotence. But, left unchecked and untreated it can lead to impotence.

What is impotence? Impotence goes beyond a declining libido and a complete loss of libido. A man is considered impotent when he cannot get an erection. All men know how easy it was to get an erection in their twenties. The sight of a girl was enough to induce an erection. Now the painful reality of the fact, that even the sight of a naked woman does not induce an erection, hits hard. Some men can get an erection but not sustain it for long enough to be of any use. They get frequent erections but in small doses, for brief periods of time. This is also considered to be impotency. The last kind of impotency is when the man gets an erection but not a complete and full erection. The penis stays in a semi erect state and penetration is not possible with this level of hardness.

There are numerous causes for impotence. Some are psychological and others are physical. Physical causes can be treated by a doctor, but some psychological causes need more help from a professional. The important thing is to go out and seek a professional’s help.

An injury suffered while playing sport or while undertaking some kind of a strenuous activity can lead to impotence. Various diseases like cancer and hypertension cause impotence as do diseases like diabetes. The medications taken to fight these diseases also have an adverse effect on sex drive and sexual performance. Feelings of stress, tension, anxiety, depression and guilt all can lead to a loss of libido and impotence. The pressures of work, the tensions of a professional life, every day stress to perform better and meet deadlines, getting work back home, fighting to stay ahead of the game every day, the depression of being a part of the rat race, can all gradually lead to impotence. A bad and unhealthy lifestyle which involves smoking, drinking, working late nights also contribute to declining libidos and the onset of impotence. Issues of confidence in one’s own self and in one’s own abilities are also important. Men who do not have a very high regard of themselves find it very difficult to perform well in the bedroom and are prime candidates for impotence.

Most of these problems have a solution. The most obvious one is to have a lifestyle which is healthy and balanced. Cutting out smoking and drinking is important, as is getting a lot of exercise and staying healthy. Exercise is important because it helps keep the body in shape which is important while having sex, and also important because it improves self confidence.
