I’m Proud of Me Because…

Spirituality | May 27th, 2008 No comments

My eleven-year-old niece Sadie ran a race and afterward she said: “I feel really tired, I did my best and I’m really proud of me.” Well said, Sadie. There are so many reasons to love Sadie, but this is one of the big ones: she reminds me of the need to acknowledge ourselves. What am I proud of me for? If I asked you right now what you’re proud of, would you be able to name five things instantly?

That caused me to reflect. Taking time daily to make a mental note of this is as important to our well-being as brushing our teeth. In fact, you could even do it while you’re brushing your teeth, or before you leave work, or before you go to bed, or even first thing in the morning. Whatever works for you – the important thing is to do it.

Five things I am proud of today:

  1. I am proud of the way I listened to a colleague who needed to talk.
  2. I am proud that I made a healthy choice at lunch.
  3. I am proud that I learned to do something new on the computer.
  4. I am proud that I took that walk after lunch I promised myself I would.
  5. I am proud I spoke up and said “that doesn’t work for me”
