How To Choose a Maternity Wedding Dress

Beauty | January 16th, 2010 1 Comment

A maternity wedding dress isn’t something that you’re necessarily forced into buying just for the fact that you’re pregnant and will be showing when your wedding day comes along. Most maternity places are going to have such a limited selection that you don’t have to go with a “maternity” dress to make your wedding day special as dresses come in so many different cuts and shapes as well as styles you’re sure to find something that is the dress of your dreams.

If you’re unsure of your likes that’s the first thing that you need to consider. You should look through catalogs and magazines as well as take advantage of what the internet has out there for you. When you find the things that you like you should print them out and begin a wedding notebook so you can track your likes when trying to find something that is going to work for you and take it with you when you go shopping. Going into a large dress shop, and sometimes just the purchase itself, can be very overwhelming so having an idea of what to look for will be invaluable.

Make a selection of all the dresses that you liked and then start to try them on so you can begin to narrow down to some of your favorites that you liked out of all your ideas.  After you have these choices then ask for the same dress but just in a couple of sizes up. Depending on how much you’re showing and how far away the wedding is will help make some determinations on if you should just go one or two sizes up.

You’ll then want to put a small pillow where your pregnant belly is going to be. Taking into account how far along you’re going to be on your wedding day should allow you to estimate how big you’re going to be.

For example if you’re only a couple months along and the wedding is coming up in only a month or two you’re really not going to need to go too far up in size, especially if it’s your first pregnancy as you’re not going to be showing hardly at all at that point. If you’re further along or the wedding is further away though you’re going to need to make sure you account for that extra size.

Take a friend with you and have them take pictures of you in the different dresses so you can go back to them later and see how you looked in the different dresses and sizes.

Now that you’ve worked with some of the larger sizes with your “belly” in them you should take some time and look at the pictures and determine which style you think flatters your shape more and you can make your final decision on the dress that you want.

One sound bit of advice is that unless you absolutely “must have” that dress that day you should take the time and go home to look at the pictures you’ve taken and even go back another time with someone else. You should also find out how long they plan on carrying a lot of stock on that style by the time your wedding comes up. If they are going to be stocking it for a long time you can wait until a little sooner to the wedding and make a size purchase decision then.
