HIV and Life Insurance

Finding an HIV life insurance policy after an HIV diagnosis is something that can be really hard to come by.

The purpose of life insurance is something that is purchased to meet one or both needs. A limited amount of insurance is known as burial insurance and is something that can go to your beneficiary in order to help pay for the costs of your funeral and subsequent burial or cremation. Also life insurance is something that can allow for you to provide continued resources for those that you leave behind.

There are some things that you should look at with life insurance should you be HIV positive:

  1. If you have any existing insurance policies you’re going to want to see if there are any included riders or life insurance policies. Two examples would be any life insurance policy that comes through your employer or sometimes if you have a mortgage there is a life insurance policy associated with that.
  2. Make sure that if this is the case you do everything you possibly can in order to keep these policies as if they lapse as they will be extremely hard to replace.
  3. Look at any death benefit that could be available through Social Security and make sure that if it’s there that it will be available to your loved ones once you pass on.
  4. If there are any questions that arise in terms of beneficiary designation make sure to consult an attorney.
  5. Finally, speak with your HIV/AIDs case working in terms of your desire to be able to obtain life insurance and be sure to ask about any programs that might be available for you. There are some life insurance companies that have begun to offer life insurance policies to those that are HIV positive more so then ever before due to the effectiveness of medications increasing the life expectancy of those infected with the virus.

Although not easy there are life insurance policies out there. If you’re at the point where you can be working you should consider an employer on the basis of being able to get a life insurance policy without having to go through any approval process.
