Hair Help: Bananas to the rescue!

Body | June 23rd, 2008

When it came time to shooting our author photos for our book, we had to do me 3 times.

There is only one reason for this: My. Hair. It’s as if my hair doesn’t even belong to me – it has not only a mind of its own, but a sense of humour.

So when I heard about a home remedy for unmanageable hair, I was ecstatic. (I love things that don’t have “for external use only” labels. If I want to eat it as well as wear it, I can!

Banana Solution
In a blender, mush up:

1 banana
1tbsp. honey
1tsp. olive oil

Shampoo hair as usual. Add banana goop to hair and leave 30 min. (If you can do a Carmen Miranda dance during this time, all the better.) Wash and rinse (no conditioner).

Once blended together, these ingredients form a humectant (which is a moisturizer). My hair is now soft, lovely, and smells good enough to eat.

Any other home beauty remedies?

Honey is great for a sunburn. Awfully sticky though.

If you have oily skin, try a mask of Milk of Magnesia.

Mixing Cetaphil cleanser with baking soda exfoliates and softens the skin.

Rinse your hair with vinegar after you shampoo – removes all product build-up and makes it very shiny.

Now that you smell like a Greek Salad, go forth and experiment!

Disclaimer: If something hideous happens to you as a result of my suggestions…it’s, uh, not my fault.

If you unfortunately end up with pieces of banana in your hair all is not lost. Rinse out as much as you can then blow dry. Simply comb out the remaining banana.
