Getting The Best Car Insurance Quote

Money | November 20th, 2009

In order to go about getting the best car insurance quote will often come down to making sure you are a good shopper for car insurance.

By shopping around a lot of different companies you’ll be able to get a wide range of quotes to be able to choose from both in price and in services offered. One thing rings true though, the lower the insurance benefits the less the insurance will cost most generally. The biggest factor though is going to be based upon the risk the drive (insured) posed to the insurance company, (insurer.)

By keeping all of these facts in mind while going forward being a diligent shopper and focusing on what benefits you need and don’t need will get you the best possible policy for the best possible price.

Risk and Premium

A car insurance company will consider several factors when they provide car insurance quotes; however like mentioned above the biggest is going to be the risk the policyholder will present to the insurance company. Those that get the best car insurance quotes are going to be those that are able to reduce the adverse risk they pose to an insurance company by keeping and maintaining a clean driving record.

Any blemish on your record; especially any collision, moving violations and sometimes even just by filing a claim with or without payout can affect your car insurance quoted rate and premium payments.

Economic Impact

The economy and the cost of overhead is something that affects the premium quoted on car insurance policy quotes. Just like any other business insurance companies are in business to make a profit. If things are bad economically they are going to have to charge enough in premium to cover the costs of being in business as well as to make a profit.

This is a reason not only to shop around but to shop several companies that are large and small. Large companies are able to endure better than smaller companies; however, they are going to have the largest amount in terms of overhead.

Choose Coverage Wisely

In addition to shopping around for the best deal one of the most important factors will also be how wise you choose the coverage that you need.

For example, if you carpool to work and you have another vehicle that a spouse drives that you can use for any other type of shopping etc… you can just skip your turn in the carpool should something happen and avoid rental reimbursement coverage. Also, if you can afford to pay $1,000 out of pocket should there be theft, collision or vandalism than you should look towards having higher deductible payments.

You’ll need to take a look and see what type of risks and dollar amounts you’re willing to take on yourself and then go with that coverage. After legally mandated coverage the rest is up to you. While you don’t want to have inadequate coverage or be underinsured you definitely don’t want to go for all in the pot overkill either.

If your insurance agent doesn’t think you’re buying adequately and have stated their case and you should disagree simply say no and don’t let yourself get pushed around by an agent. If you don’t like their tactics or overaggressive nature simply ask for another agent or go to another company entirely.

Driver Dependent Premium and Final Thoughts

Sometimes above all else being able to get the best rate is going to depend on you, the driver. Your driving record is something that you have complete control over and if you amass speeding tickets and accidents, etc… it is going to have a very strong impact on your rates.

Regardless of anything though being willing to shop around for rates and make sure you know what you’re looking for and don’t be talked into something otherwise, you’ll get the best possible rate. Each company is going to look at a situation differently, while one may say $1,000 the other may say $500 and you’re good to go.
