Fruit Nutrition Through The Ages
Since the beginning of man’s existence, fruit nutrition has always been a part of our daily diet. From the earliest biblical stories of Adam and Eve to mythological stories from other cultures across the globe fruit has had a special place in our lives. It’s a prized possession, a gift fit for the Gods; it’s served as dessert to crown a hearty meal. And its versatility to be eaten raw or cooked with other ingredients has made fruits a must have in any kitchen.
Hence it was not uncommon to find fruit trees in many backyards across the globe. They are easy to tend to since most of them grow to be trees and don’t need to be cared for but have very long productive years. It is for this reason that in the ancient days kings used to line roads with fruit trees to provide shade to weary travellers and food while they rest under them. Hence it is clear that the since times immemorial ma understood that fruits were beneficial to our bodies and these have now been proven as facts through scientific research undertaken in recent years.
Depending on the geographic location there were 2 popular fruit trees. In the temperate zones it was the apple tree and in the tropics it was the banana.
Banana nutrition has now been so well established that it now forms part of the daily diet of most people across the world. Bananas are shipped across thousands of miles to areas where there are little chances for them to grow naturally. The flexibility it offers to be turned into mouth watering dishes whether ripe or not is an added advantage of the yellow fruit. Banana nutrition is packed with goodies for the body and its benefits are different for the young and the old, the weak and the healthy. It is exploding with vitamins and minerals and iron and potassium all of which compliment the body’s regenerating process and is an instant energy booster. It has established itself as nature’s mild laxative and is a hit as a baby food due to its constituents. It is for these reasons that it is one of the primary food sources for patients recovering from long term illness or elderly persons.
Not to be beaten is the shiny apple in the temperate zones. Many a stories have been told of boisterous boys playing on the apple tree while feasting on its rich fruit. So rich is apple nutrition that it’s said that if eaten regularly one will never fall sick. Such is its impact on boosting the immune system. Coupled with the high iron content it’s a potent health tonic. With the wide variety of sizes and various hues of red and green apple nutrition has been the staple of many generations of early society.
No wonder then that with mass production these fruits are now available to consumers across the world even in places and times when it wouldn’t otherwise be available.
