Following the Spiritual Path

Healing, Health & Wellness, Meditation | November 24th, 2009 No comments

When you choose to follow the spiritual path, you are likely to find a series of obstacles that you will need to cross. As you progress, you will realize that one of the most important aspects of spirituality is the journey, more than the destination. The spiritual journey is long and hard, and there will be times when you will feel that the universe and all those in it are conspiring to prevent you from reaching your goal.

Spirituality is an essential step in the evolution of your soul. It entails a great deal of introspection and a way of life that isn’t always easy to follow. Contrary to popular belief, spirituality isn’t necessarily for those who live in seclusion. You can live in the real world and still follow the spiritual path. But you must be prepared to observe certain practices with self control and discipline.

What are the benefits of following the spiritual path? As mentioned earlier, it facilitates the evolution of your soul. In addition, it helps you to find inner peace and achieve higher levels of wisdom. Your priorities change and your world view is transformed. It also helps you to develop compassion and understanding, and will ultimately lead to your being one with the universe and all those in it.

A key factor in following the spiritual path is meditation. Be prepared for hours and hours of meditation; for years on end. You only have to study the life of Gautama Buddha to understand the importance of meditation; the serenity it provides; and the insights it offers. The greatest saints and sages have all espoused the cause of meditation, and it is an undisputed fact that meditation is the key to spiritual growth.

Effective meditation requires a great deal of dedication and commitment, and you need to be persistent in your practice in order to be centered and grounded. This will aid you in staying on the spiritual path without getting distracted or losing your way.

The process of spirituality unfolds day by day, one step at a time, as your consciousness unfolds and expands. This is possible with meditation as it helps to free you from yourself, as well as from material desires, as the shackles of the ego are thrown away. This process involves a lot of inner work that will help you to perceive, and break through, the veil of illusion that surrounds you. The world as you know it will look different, relationships will acquire a new dimension, and you will move forward another step towards spiritual enlightenment.

It isn’t easy to aspire to a spiritual life when you are surrounded by the chaos of the real world with all its attendant tensions. If you can, try to spend time at a spiritual retreat, like an ashram or monastery, in order to enhance your practice with diligence and focus. The environment at a spiritual retreat will help you to focus on your ultimate destination and achieve your goal. This will result in transformation of the self and lasting inner peace.
