This is extremely helpful. My 3 1/2 year old was recently diagnosed with SPD. Once a very confident child, he is suddenly showing signs of a lot of anxiety (his baby brother getting near him and his toys, spilling something or breaking something, remembering something from a week ago that must have scared him)...He has been going to OT for the past 2 months to work on the SPD but I'm really not sure how to handle the anxiety aside from assuring him constantly how much he is loved and what a wonderful boy he is.

This happened to my child before, this happened while we were just settled in to our new house, and as the moving company took our stuff, he thought they were taking his toys.

BuSpar (buspirone) for Anxiety: After trying to treat my anxiety and panic attacks for years with SSRIs and benzodiazepines, this finally works. I take 3 x 5 mg and started to experience a significant decrease in anxiety and compulsive thoughts, after only 4 days. So far I am happy with Buspar. No side effects whatsoever.

Atarax (hydroxyzine) for Anxiety: I take this along with Lexapro... I was having such hard times falling asleep due to nine million things going on through the day ... then the anxiety kicked in...sometimes I would be up for hours while everyone is sound to sleep...When I started taking this I fall asleep within thirty mins and usually sleep sound. It is not addicting... and good price for the good things the meds do

My son has SPD that was diagnosed at around the same age. Every child is different. We found that having a calm schedule and quiet homelife helped my son manage the stresses at school . Swinging and movement help our son and it seemed to help him to eat crunchy things at bedtime.

He is 11 now and is doing great. He does still get anxieties, but we are able to manage them better with talking them out. We want to keep a close eye on this as he is approaching adolescence and that can be a rough age for kids. He's always happily surprised us at every transition so we have no reason to think he won't manage that stage too!

I am sooooo happy to hear of other parents working to find solutions that are tailored to their children's personalities, and what works best for them. Thanks for this Chynna - I think I might try some 'brain food muffins' for our little one - these are all great tips!
