Children are naturally creative, and one of the best ways to fill your own grown-up life with more creativity is to infuse your life with some kid-like wonder.

Marney shares 10 ways to cultivate creativity by bringing out the child in you:

Break the Rules – and the Crayons: Buy crayons and a coloring book at a dollar store. Purposefully and intentionally color outside the lines. Scribble, break the crayons in half and smash them into the page. In the margins of the coloring book, write about how it feels to break the rules.

Re-Discover Love: Spend some time thinking about what you loved as a child. What colors, clothes, games, toys, activities, and dreams did you enjoy? Which of those elements are currently in your life? Which ones haven’t you seen or enjoyed in years? Make a plan for how you can rekindle some of your childhood loves in your daily life, today.

Change Your Workout: Children naturally create with their bodies. They want to run, play, jump, dance and catch fireflies; play at the age before body image questions come into question and before sedentary activities become more engaging than the natural world. Take this wisdom to heart; take a break from the gym and instead work out at a local playground. Hopscotch, pumping legs on the swings and jungle gyms aren’t just for kids! Or try other outdoor activities like gardening or hiking to cultivate a kid-like connection with nature.

Draw Your Goals: Grab some crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Think of a goal that you’d like to meet in your life, and then draw a picture of what it will look like when you’ve reached that goal. Make the drawing detailed, vivid, and kid-like! This isn’t about drawing skills—it’s about representing a vision in a fun and uninhibited way. When you’re done with your drawing, hold it up proudly and say out loud, “I DID THIS!” and then tape it up to your refrigerator.

Stack the Deck: Make your own set of kid-like “trading cards”! Start by cutting out images that you love from catalogs, magazines, greeting cards, etc. Focus on images that make you feel full, alive, and truly happy. Glue the images, collage-style, to cards in an old card deck. This is a project you can work on a little bit at a time until you have a whole deck of cards that inspire you to dream big and live your fullest life! Don’t forget to collage the outside pack, too.

Create Whimsy: Walk through your living space and see if there is an area – even just a small one – that could use a little bit of child-like whimsy. Maybe a children’s book belongs with the serious coffee table books. Perhaps you could make some pipe-cleaner flowers to go in a tiny vase on a kitchen shelf that you see when you do the dishes. Just think about the corners where a little smile could go a long way.

See With a Child’s Eyes: Find an interesting image from a magazine, and tear it out. Place it on a flat surface, and then turn it upside down. Squint your eyes a bit to see what you can see in the new, upside-down image. Try to find an image, activity or story in the lines and spaces. If you’re having trouble seeing anything, ask yourself, “If I were a child, what might I see in this picture?” and go from there. Take markers and pens and start doodling to expand on the picture to illuminate your images. Add words to the page, if you are drawn to do so.

Draw a To-Do List: Replace your regular “to do list” with two big pieces of poster board that you tape on the wall, on which you will write a list with markers. With your non-dominant hand, use really broad, child-like writing to create your traditional list of things you need to DO. On the other poster board, write a list of things you dream to BE. Allow yourself to move freely between the two different lists, allowing a free-flowing relationship to develop between them. What do you find that you learn about yourself, and your current priorities, through the different lists, allowing a free-flowing relationship to develop between them? What do you find that you learn about yourself, and your current priorities, through this exercise?

Change the Game: Find a board or card game from your childhood in a thrift store or your own closet, and have fun re-writing the rules. What if CLUE became a game about decorating the rooms in Fun House style, rather than solving a murder mystery? What if Twister was a massive canvas for art? What if chess pieces were purple and pink and polka-dotted and the game was about moving across the board together, instead of in competition? If possible, alter the actual game board and pieces to celebrate your rebellion against the rules. If that’s not possible, write about your re-write in a journal, relishing the thought of reigning creativity.

Engage Your Senses: Go on a nature walk with child’s eyes. Challenge yourself to make all of your senses more open and aware, in the way that a child can take in the world. Gather interesting leaves, rocks, little flowers, and then bring them home and arrange them to create your own little nature shrine.

Translation from Sanskrit: Tada = mountain; Asana = seat, posture.

In this pose, we stand tall and strong, rooted through our feet and rising into the sky through our crown, like a mountain.

Benefits

Improves posture

Relieves sciatica

Calms your mind

What to Watch Out For

Officially, take it easy in this pose if you’re prone to headaches, insomnia, or low blood pressure. Personally, I think the shoulder and neck release could help a headache, and the mind-calming nature could help insomnia. But always check with your doctor.

Step by Step

Stand with your feet parallel, big toe bases touching, heals slightly apart—or, if you need a wider stance for better balance, with your feet below your hips.

Inhale, lift your toes up, spread them like fingers, and exhale, place them back on the mat.

Rock back and forth, and from side to side, moving as you breathe until your weight is evenly balanced between and centered in each foot. To check this, bring your attention to the four corners of your feet—the root of your big toe, pinky toe, and inside and outside of your heel — bring equal weight to all four corners. Breathe long a deep while you do this.

Engage your thigh muscles, let your knees stay unlocked and microscopically bent, lengthen your tailbone to the floor and lift your pubis towards your belly button (a little pelvic tilt).

Draw your belly button a little towards your spine and up a bit, to engage your core.

Visualize this lift streaming all the way up your spine to the crown of your head as you inhale, lengthening your spine and creating space between your vertebrae.

Open your palms to the front.

Let your shoulders relax down as you exhale.

See if you can find a place for your head where it can sit, balanced, so your neck muscles are completely relaxed. Let your eyes settle on one place directly in front of you, and soften your gaze. Relax the muscles around your eyes and let them be slightly unfocused.

Off the Mat

You can do this pose while you’re waiting in line absolutely anywhere. It’s a great way to pass the time—much nicer than mentally skewering the person at the checkout counting out her pennies.

I am a dreamer at heart. There is nothing that gets me more excited that when I start moving towards a dream. On the same note, watching others live their dreams is addictive. It is my drug of choice. Consider me your pusher and watch all your dreams come true.

Believe Your Dream Is Possible

How do you convince yourself? Look around at the world and know that every physical thing around you (including the clothes on your back) was once nothing but a dream. Absolutely everything. Let that inspire you.

Remind yourself that those who pursue their dreams do not know all, or sometimes any, of the hows. Don’t let that stop you. Be confident that you will find your way and, people or information that will be helpful in your dream will become available to you. An attitude that things will work out in the end is magnetic. It is the attitude of belief and knowing. It will help you greatly in your journey.

Visualize it Happening Regularly

See the endpoint and revel in it. Swim in it. Visualize so strongly that you get tingly inside. Bring yourself to tears with the joy of it actually materializing. Make a vision board (collage) to make the details of your dream real. Use the vision board to help you really flesh out what you really want to happen within your dream. Look at it often in belief.

Shift Gears If You Are Feeling Resistant or Fearful

Again, it is OK to feel doubtful or not know HOW your dream will come to pass. But, sometimes the how really gets in the way and the dream begins to feel impossible. It is precisely at those times that you need to shift gears and either focus positively on what you do know how to do OR distract yourself.

When operating in fear or doubt, our higher wisdom can never be accessed. It is not the time to make decisions to change our minds about the validity of a dream. If you are not able to focus on what you are able to do, take the time to shift gears entirely and go see an inspiring movie, talking to an uplifting friend, or go sit quietly in nature. The dreamer in you will reemerge quickly if you are willing to pay attention to how you are feeling instead of muscling through.

Tell Few (if Any) About Your Dream in the Beginning Stages

When you dream is new and the energy is not yet a strong force often it is better to keep it quiet. In that sense, you are given the time and the space to really figure out what you want. The glorious details will develop as you consider and reconsider your dream. Let it be just your dream for a while, devoid of the opinions and ideas of others while it grows in strength and energy.

Take Joy in the Process

Make a decision that you are going to enjoy the journey towards your dream. Your dream or goal is actually happening long before it manifests. If you don’t enjoy the process, you are missing out on your dream.

On your journey, look out for signs of progress and celebrate every little victory. It is all a part of your larger dream. Celebrate the big and small and know that you are on your way.

I love oatmeal, I think of it as the ultimate comfort food. And yet in my case it may be a shadow comfort. I wanted to feel virtuous that I was putting good food into my body. And yet, despite the fact that I know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I have noticed that when I start my day with comfort food breakfast (bagels, muffins and croissants all fit the category for me) I tend to keep eating in unhealthy ways through out the day.

The mind-body connection is pretty powerful

I am not prescribing anything and, I wish you many happy mornings waking up to oatmeal, but as I struggled to button my favorite jeans, I thought (for a split second) of taking up Karryn Ransom’s idea to eat in reverse. And yet, I worried that cereal at night was going to make me feel too full and bloated for my 5:30 am strength training class. So I went back to my Isagenix diet which offers me a protein shake in the morning and night, and a balanced meal for lunch. I no longer crave caffeine in the morning, and I have much more energy for my morning workout (not to mention connecting with my husband after 8 p.m.). Most significantly, having been in a little bit of a slump recently, I am much more optimistic about everything.

Here’s hoping that reflection is possible without caffeine

Now here is the downside - my body is doing great, but some hidden part of my psyche is longing to sit with a mug of coffee and sink into myself. Longing may be too mild for the obsessive way in which I reminisce about sitting in sun-lit coffee shops and kitchens knowing that all was right with the world because I had my cuppa joe. Chances are I need to take time in every day and find an alternative to the reflective time, I used to have, that seemed so bound up with caffeine.

Did you give up coffee in the morning? Are you struggling to? Let’s support each other. Tell me your story.

Not only will a natural-bristle brush slough away dead skin, leaving you looking smashing, but it will also help to improve circulation. Enthusiasts of the method say that it may also help with the drainage of lymph nodes, giving skin less of a puffy, I-just-ate-a-pint-of-ice-cream look. Hey, the light massage of a body brush also helps reduce the appearance of cellulite – that’s a win-win, huh?

Brush your whole body – under your arms, behind the knees and your bum, too – and you will see a marked improvement in the appearance of your skin and overall feeling of your body.
Have you always loved to read and wished you could write? Want to say something but have no idea where to start? Here are five surprising tips to get you thinking like a writer.

Listen

Record a conversation, then type it word for word. Audio re-play lets you hear patterns of speech and catch nuances of meaning you may not hear in the moment. Before you know it, you may have the voice of your next character in your head.

Copy

Imitation is more than the highest form of flattery. It is how we learn. Read what you love…novels, articles, poems. Then practice writing in the very same way. How? Paraphrase: Start with a paragraph. Re-write it in your own words—not great big flowery words or fierce competitive diction, just write what you think it means. Repeat. This will get you thinking like the authors you read, and get you noticing their styles and techniques.

Be a Kid

The best writing advice ever: “You’re eleven. I’m eleven.” Too many big words, too much impressing, too much explaining about what you’re explaining gets in the way. Just say what you see, as if you’re eleven and your readers are eleven. They’ll get it. And they’ll thank you for your simplicity.

Sing!

Really! Singing has been proven to open wells of emotion in the brain. When you sing, you contact your inner world…the place where imagination comes from. Open your voice and then fire up your computer and clatter away. Keep the music playing to keep you on a roll when your voice has moved from your throat to your fingertips.

Flow

Don’t stop. Write pen to paper, fingers to keyboard without time to edit. Give yourself ten minutes of no-stop writing, just go, go, go. Then build up to an hour. Re-work what you’ve written only at the end. The good stuff is rarely at the top of the page. It’s buried deep, like gold and diamonds. You have to mine it, in the dark, with courage to go deep till you’ve unearthed it.

If eating high quality food with few pesticides and chemicals is important to you, it may be easier than you’d think to save money on your grocery bill. The organic section of your grocery store isn’t the only place to purchase healthy whole foods; in fact, it may be the most expensive option!

If you’re searching for organic or hormone-free meats, free range eggs, or low to no pesticide produce, you already know how expensive such items can be at traditional grocery stores. It can be a bit intimidating to watch your bill go higher and higher each month, and it may be tempting to switch back to traditionally farmed items. Before you do so, however, consider taking advantage of what your local community has to offer.

Farm Markets - Food with a Face

First, check out any local growers or farm markets near you. Our neighborhood has one every Sunday during the spring, summer, and fall, and we can often find some great deals. Be sure to ask the vendor where your produce is coming from - some import the food from other areas. Most, however, grow their produce locally and use minimal pesticides. When in doubt, just ask. Farmers are generally more than happy to discuss their products with you.

We’re able to get fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, honey, plants, and bread at our farm market, and my wallet is very thankful! If money is especially tight, consider asking around as the market is about to close and seeing if any of the farmers will give you a discount. They may not want to load everything up and take it home, meaning a better deal for you.

CSA Farms - Community Supported Agriculture

CSAs are another way to support your local community and buy high quality food at the same time. In this farming model, members pay up front for a season of vegetables. They then get a weekly delivery or pick up of produce, fruits, and sometimes meat. CSAs are available for different seasons, depending on your geographical area. Local Harvest is a website that provides information about CSAs, farm markets and more - check to see what you can find for your local area. We participated in a CSA for the first time this year from a local organic farm, and were able to get a half bushel of organic produce each week for about half what it would have cost at the grocery store.

Not Your Typical Warehouse Store

If possible, you may also want to think about buying items in bulk. I’m not talking about warehouse stores like Costco and Sams Club, although I suppose those are options as well. I’m thinking more along the lines of co-ops, Amish food markets, and dry good stores. Often these types of stores have bulk bins, where you can purchase as much or as little of an item as you need. Products are priced by the pound, and since there’s no flashy packaging, prices are lower overall. We purchase many staples this way, such as beans, flour, lentils, etc. We find that we can get a variety of more expensive ingredients that we couldn’t otherwise afford, by buying them from the bulk bins.

Far too many people rule out organic or pesticide free food as an option based simply on the prices at their local grocer. With some creativity and research, it may be possible to afford high quality organic or local food, even on a budget.

For many of us, it’s threatening, confusing and downright scary.

You Want to Do What?!

The first time I turned down a coital proposition (in grade 11), it was more out of surprise than fear. Maybe I’m just more oblivious than most, but I never saw it coming. Kissing was great; that is, after a horrible first try in my green Honda civic after watching Footloose, when I sadly deciding on the way home that I just didn’t like kissing. Second base (feeling her up at the back of Mr. Quan’s physics classroom while the teachers were having a meeting up front) left me physically shaking the rest of the afternoon. Third base was a pure primal experience, my hands and body instinctively discovering what to do in the backseat of mom’s Rabbit diesel (as soon as it was over, Kyle and Lisa shouted out from the car next to us that they’d won the bet about whether or not I’d groan – no secrets on a teenage double date).

Going All The Way

When it was apparently time to round the bases I was lying naked on top of her on the shag carpet at the top of her parent’s stairs, but the idea of “going all the way” had never even entered my mind. So when she (also a virgin, by the way) shyly suggested she’d like to, I uttered in panic the only words I could think of to escape the situation with my virginity and her pride intact: “My heart says yes, but my head says no.” Still one of the most poetic and sensitive things I’ve ever said in bed.

Indulging my teenage hormones in backseats was fantastic and imperative, but intercourse was grown-up territory I somehow knew I wasn’t emotionally ready for.

I love you, but…

Enter girlfriend #2 in grade 12. Same prone position, this time on the black leather couch in her trusting parents’ basement. This time I said yes to a plan to get birth control next week. Then a few days later I devastated her with the decision that I actually wasn’t ready yet. “Devastated” because she thought it meant I didn’t love her, which was far from the truth.

A few months more together and I was boldly walking with her into the family planning clinic. I was the only boyfriend there, but this was our decision and I was going to be part of it (a bravery she didn’t share as she sat in the car while I bought the back-up condoms from the drugstore). We made the doctor laugh with a joke about a new oral contraceptive (say “no”), and walked out with a prescription for intercourse in four weeks time.

Where Am I?

So we were ready: her popping pills, me carrying condoms in my wallet. Two weeks before the well-planned ceremony (to be complete with flowers, gentle music, and of course a fuzzy eye-gazing as we merged into one), we accidentally copulated during a camping trip. I honestly didn’t know what was happening.

“Where am I?” I asked tentatively.

“Inside me” was the soft answer.

“Oh,” I uttered, trying not to sound disappointed or scared, “I love you.”

Despite all the careful planning and research and readiness, I was in fact deeply disappointed, and scared. And feeling betrayed. Had she tricked me, stolen my precious virginity? She was the woman, she was the one who could feel me entering her, she should have known what was happening and stopped it, or at least informed me.

Boys Cry Too

Maybe at age 18 I still wasn’t ready for such an adult emotion and activity. Or maybe it is just a difficult transition that is never as easy as the movies. I was in love, in a good relationship, protected, of legal age, informed, in mutual consent… and it still took a week of tears and hugs to trust each other again.

I share my story to show what the movies don’t – that a boy’s first time is more than a thrill or badge of honor. Unaware, unsure, scared, lost, betrayed – we share these emotions with our partners, just as we share the feeling of “bursting with libidinal energy” http://www.sinclairinstitute.com/) that Lucy wrote about in her article “The First Time”, and just as we (hopefully) later come to share the beauty and wonder of this gift we give to each other.

In the comments below, I would love to hear from male readers if you had similar experiences, or from female readers what they have shared or understood of men’s first times. There are as many different first experiences as there are men, but I’m guessing there are some universal truths we all share that run deeper than we generally talk about or see in the movies.

Search the Web for “detox” and you will come across a mind-boggling number of plans urging you to “drop pounds” with their lickety-split dietary rules.

But that’s not what a detox is intended to do – at least, that’s not why ancient alternative health healers came up with the flush-your-system plans.

“Fasting and cleansing to purify the body and mind were first embraced thousands of years ago as a pathway to connect with the divine and achieve higher levels of awareness and clarity,” Adina Niemerow writes in her book, Super Cleanse. “It’s more relevant than ever today.”

But “today” many people fail to interpret the spiritual elements of detoxing and instead focus on the weight loss aspects, choosing plans that can actually make them sick or have harmful effects on their health.

That’s why you need to lean on a detox plan that helps to cleanse your body and restore your health. A good detox can eliminate migraines, restore kidney function, get you a rosy-cheeked glow, increase energy and help you sleep like a baby – just to name a few.

Here are a few tips to help you get in detox shape

Eliminate all of those “triggers,” like caffeine, alcohol, soda and refined sugars. It might seem like a contradiction, – seeing as how all of these things give you an energy boost – but the truth is all of these triggers, like coffee or your favorite candy bar, only give you a temporary energy spike. When you eliminate them from their diet, you will experience a type of “withdrawal,” leaving you with headaches and mood swings. Hang in there, when the symptoms subside, you’ll feel glorious.

Take away red meat and poultry. And if you can swing it, even fish, choosing beans, raw and unsalted nuts, legumes, nut butters, and leafy greens to get your nutrients instead. If not, pick a wild, unfarmed fish, like salmon or halibut to get your fishy fix.

Honey I love you. If you need a dash of sweetness in your life, pick a little honey, maple syrup or brown rice syrup to fix your sweet tooth instead of choosing a refined or artificial sweetener.

Take away processed foods made with white flour. You know all that brown, icky stuff manufacturers pull away from foods like flour? Yeah, that’s actually the part that makes a whole grain, well, “whole.” Choose foods made with whole grain flour instead.

Eliminate packaged foods. Choosing fresh foods over canned or packaged foods means you are consuming whole, unprocessed food items – the best kind you can get.

Remove eggs and all dairy. Your body will thank you. Replace milk with almond or rice milk – not soy, it can cause allergies, too – and replace scrambled eggs with a bowl of whole grain oatmeal or cereal. You’ll stay full until lunchtime.

Seeing is believing

Taking these steps will detox your diet for the better. Enhance your experience by choosing 100 percent organic foods and mixing things up with a multitude of vegetables and fruits on your plate. Spice things up with flavorful herbs instead of condiments, and drink loads of water.

You may also want to start a food journal – writing down how you feel throughout the detox will help keep you motivated when your determination falters – you know, like when that chocolate cake looks, oh-so-yummy. Right about then you’re going to want to crack open that journal.

And remember you’re gonna feel great.
