Family Insurance, Making the Right Policy Decisions

Family insurance is one of the many diverse options that most insurance companies are going to offer through their insurance package options.

In strict contrast to the single coverage or the additional coverage of just a child or dependent spouse only the family insurance is going to cover both spouses as well as all of the eligible dependent children. The premiums for the family insurance are going to be considerably higher than the opposing single coverage but when the policyholder has children it is of course going to be negligible than when you’d look at purchasing individual policies.

Structure

The family insurance plan is going to have a different structure than that of single coverage. The deductible of the family insurance is going to be higher than the individual policy but there is usually always going to be a maximum per calendar year limit.

A family insurance policy is usually going to have coverage for prenatal care, child care as well as the routine annual physicals for the children usually up to the age of 16. Under almost all of the insurance plans the dependent child will be ineligible for coverage once they reach the age of 18 although there are going to be exceptions to this and extended benefits allowed.

Employer Sponsored

When it comes to the employer sponsored family insurance plan options you might find that you don’t have a lot of choice in coverage options but you’ll be offered the opportunity to purchase your policy at the group premium rate though which will offer you some cost savings.

If you do need this type of coverage but don’t have the benefit of being able to participate in an employer sponsored plan you can still of course purchase a family coverage plan through the insurance company of your choice though you will have to remember that your premium is going to be significantly higher than in most all cases.

Employer Sponsored Comparison

If both parents are working and have family insurance options offered at their work it is of course beneficial to compare both the coverage offered and the premiums charged for both of the plans. There are some families that will find it to their advantage to elect single coverage from one of the workplaces and get coverage for the dependent child through the other workplace.

If you have more than one dependent child through you’ll find that it’s usually always going to make sense to get your policy through just one of the spouse’s employers and have it for the family coverage.

Simply make sure that you’re comparing the plans and all of the options that come with it carefully in terms of the monthly premiums against both the co-pay amounts and the annual deductible. You’ll also need to look at your specific family and recognize if there are any special circumstances that might apply that could change the situation and recommendations entirely.

Private Insurance

If you find that you’re going to need to purchase private family insurance make sure that you get multiple quotes of coverage and make sure that you compare and contrast everything before you make your final decision and sign up for a policy. If it’s possible you might find that you can benefit through a multi-policy discount if you can get your coverage from a place that offers homeowners, auto and life insurance as well.
