Explore the Healing Process

When does the healing process begin and when does it end? Does it begin when you first feel the reduction of symptoms and does it end when you feel no symptoms any more? Does healing only apply to a condition that manifests itself on the physical plane? Or is there so much more to healing than meets the eye? It really is so hard to say…

The healing process takes place in stages. If you want to be healed you must be patient, very patient. It is a slow process and the time taken for healing depends on the individual and upon the extent of the wound to be healed. Just as we wait for a broken bone to fuse, or a scar to fade, we must also wait for emotional wounds to heal.

Human minds and hearts are very fragile. Our feelings are easily hurt and the scars take a long time to heal. Any trauma we experience in our lives have long term consequences that may remain till the end of our lives. Hence, it is important to give the healing process a chance to work at the deepest levels. This means you need to look within yourself and acknowledge the pain that you harbor. For that pain is a symptom of the wound within. The deeper the wound, the darker the scar, and the longer the healing process. There are no short cuts in the healing process.

Who is a healer? Are we talking about spiritual leaders, doctors or even practitioners of alternative medicines or therapies? Are healers those who can rid you of all ills by merely laying their hands on you? Or do healers administer medicines or carry out surgical procedures? Many believe that alternative medicines can cure you as effectively as prescription drugs that are chockfull of chemicals.

How would you define alternative medicines today? We know for sure that Homeopathy and Ayurveda have long been used for treating ailments from the common cold to cancer. There are other treatments that are lesser known in the western hemisphere such as Unani. But can alternative medicines go beyond that which is ingested?

There are many healing therapies that do not prescribe the consumption of medicines. Healing techniques such as yoga and meditation are said to have far reaching effects on a multitude of ailments – because as they say “It is all in the mind.” It is believed that ailments in the mind are manifested as disease in the body…hence, the theory is, cure the mind to cure the body.

However, an ailment cannot be treated in isolation. It is usually linked to various factors in the mind, body and spirit. It therefore needs to be addressed at different levels. This is where holistic therapy steps in. Holistic therapy advocates a combination of techniques such as Ayurveda to heal you internally, yoga to tackle the problem on a more physical plane, and meditation to address the problem at a mental and spiritual level. Yoga and meditation work in tandem to heal you in multiple ways.
