Discount Cell Phone Plans: Free Government Cell Phones and Free Senior Cell phones

Technology | April 8th, 2011 4 Comments

Saving money is the aim of many in this economy.  Even when the economy is booming, most people still enjoy saving money on necessary items where they can so that they can use the extra money for other expenses. Cellular phones are becoming more of a necessity for everyone as people become busier. So, how can you get a good discount on your cell phone plan? For one example, if you are on government assistance, did you know that you are eligible for a free government cell phone?

What are some of the things you should expect from a decent cellular phone plan? You should have reliable coverage. You should also be able to text and use any internet services, provided that your phone is capable of connecting to the internet. Once you are sure that your cell phone provider will give you everything you need, then you can concentrate on searching for discounts.

Almost every provider offers discounts, but not all of these discount cell phone plans are made known immediately, instead, you have to ask for them.  Military cell phone discounts are available from the largest providers, but a military discount will also not be automatically added to your contract. With proof of active military status, this discount can be requested.

If your company wants to offer discount cell phone plans to its employees, then check with cellular providers. Not every company is eligible for a discount.  It is easy to find out whether you may be eligible, because providers keep a list of companies that can get the discounted cell phone rates. Usually, the company must be a larger company, and smaller corporations can be excluded if they are too small. If you are an employee of a company and would like to see if you can get a discount on your cell phone plan, check with the provider that your company uses to see if the company is eligible.

Typically, cellular phone plan discounts must be applied at the time the contract is signed. If you did not make known your desire for a discount at the time you signed your cell phone contract, then you may be able to contact the company and ask them to give you a discount.  Alternatively, you may be able to switch plans and get a discount or take advantage of lower rates.

For the senior of our society, there are many programs such as safelink that offer free cell phones for senior citizens.

Technically, a prepaid phone option can be considered a discount cell phone plan.  Prepaid phones or pay as you go phones mean that you can pay as little as you wish to stay in touch. They usually offer basic calling and texting plans, but not data packages.  For cell phone users who do not need access to e-mail on the go and who do not text, this may be a great option. The downside of a pay as you go plan is that texting is pay-per-text, and young callers who text more frequently than they talk can make the price go up rapidly. A positive aspect is being able to have a say in how much you pay, as there are usually not many fees included in the price of a pay as you go plan.

When youíre looking for discount cell phone plans, be ready to look around at different companies, do research, and ask for what you want.
