Detachment and Remembering God: A message from Dadi Janki

Spirituality | October 7th, 2008

Detachment is a biggie on the spiritual lessons list. I think it’s The Big One. If not for tendencies to worry and feed ego, then for feeling “unloving” or a-spiritual by being detached. Love is so often confused with attachment and involvement. Leadership with micromanagement. Service with sympathy.

But when we “observe”, as Dadi Janki and the Buddha teaches, we are conscious. And when we are conscious, we can see what form of love, leadership and service is required for ourselves and those around us.

Dear friend,

Om shanti. One of the things that prevents us from making fast spiritual progress is attachment. Remember that you are a soul in the human body. Realize this and stabilize yourself in the original religion of the self so you can return to God. Become detached from the body. Attachment pulls the soul and hurts the heart and the mind. Out of the five vices attachment causes the most sorrow. Let there be the deep realization of what attachment is.

Attachment to one’s own sanskars (patterns) means that you keep using your old sanskars. Attachment to your nature means that you don’t change it, and there is also attachment to desires. Each one knows their own attachment. The most important effort you can make at this time is to remember the God. To do this, become detached and bodiless. You have to be detached whilst doing action, because only in this way can you become separate from everything. There is the exercise of three steps: 1. Be detached. 2. Become separate, and 3. Be an observer. You need to do this, because attachment to something or another will pull you again and again. Whether it’s something from the past or something that’s to happen in the future, you find the mind drawn when you’re attached. What do you have to pay attention to in the present? Become detached, separate and an observer.

With love,

Dadi Janki
