Having the Right Wine Glasses

When you’re getting ready for your dinner party you’re likely to think about whether or not you have the right wine glasses for the party. Most people are going to know there is a difference; however, most people are not going to know which should be used for a red wine and which should be used for a white wine.

While the temperature of the wine is of the main concern for people the glass that it is served in is just a crucial of a concern as the type/shape of the glass can completely influence the taste of the wine. The glass is one that can direct the wine:

  • To the tip of the tongue
  • The back of the mouth
  • The sides of the mouth

The type of the glass that you’re using will direct the wine to where you want it to be and will truly affect and make you have an appreciation when it comes to the “ultimate” tasting experience.

The Main Types of Crystal Wine Glasses

When it comes to wine drinking there are four main classes that will be used more than any other. The crystal wine glass is one that is recommended to be used the most. The reason for this is the heavier make of the crystal glass will change the taste of a wine for the better. There are glasses when it comes to red wine. Those glasses are going to be both wide and tall so you are able to swirl, take in the aroma and savor the wine. Getting at least this type of glass is definitely recommended when you’re starting or purchasing for your wine collection. You’ll basically be using this for a Merlot or a Cabernet.

The next type is the white wine glass. These glasses are going to be smaller than the others and the wine is going to be able to stay at the same temperature at which it was served. The opening of the glass should be just a bit larger than the actual glass itself. A white wine glass is going to be typically larger than a regular wine glass. A straighter and thinner glass for white wine is for a vintage that is aged a little more then another wine.

You should have a Burgundy glass for your collection. They are going to be larger than the typical Bordeaux glass which will allow for you to have the maximum level of enjoyment with this wine.

Considerations

When you’re deciding on which glasses you’re going to be using for a dinner you should:

  • Consider the type of wine you’re going to be serving

There are going to be other wines that you will serve later; such as, the dessert wine but you should take into higher consideration the main wine you’re going to be serving. The dessert wines are sweeter and should be served in both a smaller and a wider glass than your main wine.

Wines are meant to entice the:

  • Mouth
  • Nose
  • Eyes

The glass that you use will allow all three of these things to pleasantly occur in every way. The big if is, if you use the right one. The right glass is going to allow you to bring out all of the characteristics of a fine wine and get the true enjoyment for yourself and your guests from the investment that you’ve made.

Wine Glass Basics

There is a rhyme and a reason behind the way the wine glass is made. The base is what will make sure the glass stays upright and the stem will make sure you do not have to touch the actual glass itself which will keep you from warming the wine up with your hands. The body is what will allow the drinker to see the clarity of the wine and allow all of the senses we talked about above to come out. It will allow the drinker to take in everything and be able to hold the wine until they are ready to drink it.
