Comparing Insurance Quotes

Daily | November 16th, 2009

To make it possible to actually compare insurance quotes you’ll need to make sure that all of the quotes you have received are for exactly the same coverage. Insurance coverage is the protection you’re paying for in terms of liability and the value of the purchase.

An insurance policy will cover the costs you’d otherwise personally incur due to such things; such as:

    • Car accidents
    • Theft
    • Property damage
    • Others

The insurance quote you receive from the insurance broker you’re working with or the insurance agent is going to have 3 main components, though there are others, those are:

    1. Pricing
    2. Schedule for payments
    3. Covered items/perils

For instance, if you purchase full auto coverage you’d have protection from liability if you hit someone or comprehensive coverage if your car is stolen. With homeowners insurance you’d be covered for all named perils. There are policies that you can get called an all-risk insurance coverage where the only things not covered are those that are named exclusions. You’ll want to discuss all of this with your agent or broker to make sure you get all of the information that you need to make a wise purchase.

Depending on the type of insurance that you need the costs can vary quite significantly so this is the main reason you’re going to want to get more than one quote and compare the insurance quotes before selecting a specific insurance company and signing a policy.

    Three Quotes Minimum

When getting insurance quotes it’s suggested to go based on a rule of three. In order to get an accurate comparison base you should get no less than three quotes. When you’re looking to obtain an insurance quote there is no cost to you other than your time. by investing your time and purchasing the right policy with the coverage you need and the best and most competitive price it is more than worth your time.

    Compare For Accuracy

In order to make sure you’re getting the best possible comparison you need to make sure that all of the personal information that you provided is consistent on all of the quote applications that you filled out.

You’re going to want to check both the duration of the policy and the total yearly premium payment. Should the insurance premium be taxable where you’re at you’re going to make sure that amount is included in the total policy premium amount.

Check for hidden fees and make sure you read carefully. Include everything in the total cost of the overall insurance. Get the big picture and don’t find yourself caught off guard.

    Compare Quoted Coverage

Take out the most expensive quote you got and list out all of the coverage options included within that quote. After that make a chart with the others and then do a comparison against the most expensive to see what may have been added or removed and see if those are options that you need.

Take a look at all of the coverage and figure out what is going to best suit your needs. Anything in the coverage groups that you think you don’t need and remove it from all of the quotes. (You want to keep things consistent throughout all the quotes when you are doing your comparisons.) Make checks with anything you want to have removed from the policy and make sure that those are non essential items that don’t have to be written into the policy. For instance, you can’t remove liability from an auto insurance policy as that is state regulated law. There are also other things that you might not think about but you shouldn’t remove.

Don’t find yourself into the suck that you’re not purchasing enough coverage. There are people that will end up purchasing way too much insurance; especially if they don’t take the time to compare the insurance quotes. Often time pushy agents will try to throw in everything under the sun and then some. Don’t purchase coverage that you don’t need. Don’t let yourself get talked into something you don’t want or need.

    Check Company History

Check out the company’s history and make sure they are customer service successful. Make sure you check not only the complaint policies but also how they handled the complaints.

Simply going with a company because they offer the cheapest possible rate doesn’t mean much to you if that company has a poor track record and horrible customer service. There are some companies that offer really low rates but should you incur a loss they take an extended amount of time to resolve and then pay out valid claims.
