Coffee Is Good For You? Yes!

Nutrition | February 9th, 2009

One of the passions in my life is coffee. Yes, coffee. I have more than six years’ worth of experience in the coffee industry and have learned to love the beverage, the culture, and the benefits of coffee. Yes, benefits! For so long, coffee has been placed on the whipping post by society and the medical field as an unhealthy beverage. Recent studies have changed the medical field’s perspective on this ancient drink, however. If you’re like me and want every excuse to drink another cup, then read on.

Caffeine

The only aspect of coffee that can be reasonably justified as not-so-good for you is the caffeine. People with heart issues should stay away from every form of caffeine, but for the common person, caffeine is not harmful. Having one to three cups of coffee a day has no negative effect on the overall health of a person. On the contrary, caffeine has actually been proven to increase mental activity and memory retention. Drinking a cup of coffee before studying or taking a test may even improve your results.

Health Benefits

CoffeeDetective.com has a plethora of information regarding coffee’s endless health benefits. One of the most remarkable benefits of coffee is the amount of antioxidants one cup contains. Coffee has more than four times the amount of antioxidants than one cup of green tea. Green tea has long been the poster child for antioxidants, but it may have to take a back seat to coffee.

Coffee also contributes to your daily fiber intake. Eight ounces of coffee has about 1.5 grams of fiber, and who drinks only eight ounces? As a nation of people who are greatly lacking in fiber, a few cups of coffee can bring a great deal of relief.

Would you believe that coffee can also help relieve allergies? When you have an allergic reaction, you take an antihistamine. Antihistamines stop your body from falsely reacting to whatever is causing the reaction. Coffee is a natural antihistamine that can bring relief to itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, and other reactions. The coffee doesn’t even have to be caffeinated–it can be decaf and still have the same effect.

Even more significantly, many studies conducted at Harvard, NYU, and other reputable universities conclude that there is a significant link between drinking coffee and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Studies have also linked lower cancer risks to drinking coffee on a daily basis. If that isn’t enough for you, coffee has also been said to assist with other diseases such as Parkinson’s, diabetes, and chronic migraine headaches.

These are just a few examples of coffee’s incredible benefits. If you’re interested in learning more, go to Positively Coffee or Coffee Review for an even greater amount of information on the powers of coffee. Besides being the number-one beverage in the world (aside from water), it has great hidden benefits that are slowly being uncovered. So the next time someone gives you the evil eye or a guilt trip for drinking another cup, don’t be moved, because you’ll know this one’s to your health!
