Plan Ahead

The key when it comes to buying for mom and to know what she is going to like for Christmas is making sure to plan ahead, don’t wait until the last minute after everything has been picked over. Waiting until the last minute is only going to make you panic and then end up buying something that’s just going to stay in the closet or another meaningless knickknack that will simply sit on the shelf and collect dust all year.

When planning ahead you should keep a list all year long. Whenever she ends up mentioning something really cool, or something she might like write it down. If she talks about a gadget that someone has or she has seen that would come in handy, how she’s never had a massage but it seems like it would be a fun experience, keep notes of all those things. Now when Christmas rolls around you can not only surprise her with a gift that she is really going to love but that you cared enough to put thought in it and listened and remembered what she’s talked about. Such an easy access way to make sure you pick out the perfect present for mom.

Take Inventory

Take an inventory of the things she likes to do. This is different than the above in the aspects that if she likes to cook or likes the kitchen then you can take an inventory of the things that she could use there. For example, is her pots and pan set getting old? Does she need new bake ware? Are her knives starting to get dull? And many more things that you can either replace or have redone, like having her knives sharpened. Things like this will go a long way and something that she’ll truly love, enjoy and appreciate.

Look At Past Gifts

Take a look at some of the past gifts that you or others have gotten for her. What has she done with these gifts that she has been given in the past? If you find them in the house or you never hear her talk about them or how much she’s liked them then you should probably take another route this Christmas.

Sentimentality

If your mom is sentimental one of the best things you could do is dig out some old photos that she loves and have them restored and framed. One other thing that you could do that is a fairly new option coming down in cost is take one of the old photos and they can make a canvas painting print out of it that she could hang up somewhere in the house. It’s an amazing and is sure to make mom cry, happy tears though this time. It’s such an amazing genuine and personal gesture.

Look At the Book She Reads

One final option that you could look at is what type of books she is reading. That can work to help you get an idea of what she’s currently into especially if you’re older and moved out of the house pay attention when you’re over.

If she has a lot of books on:

Whatever she’s into you can tailor a gift to that; such as, with the wine example you could get her a wine basket that has a nice wine with cheese and crackers and other wine related things.

Should the bookshelf simply be just completely jam packed you obviously know she’s really into reading so why not just get her a gift card to a bookstore. If she’s not near a major bookstore outlet you could get a gift card for a retailer that does a lot of online sales selection too so she has a way to purchase and you still provide that gift. If you do something impersonal like a gift card it’s still a good idea but you should put it in a card with a nice sentimental and personal note.
