Cancer and Life Insurance, Finding Coverage
Getting life insurance with cancer is one of the most difficult things you can try to get. Not only have you battled to defeat your disease but not now you have to battle to get life insurance.
Although getting a life insurance policy after a cancer diagnosis is challenging it’s not actually impossible to do so. The chances will vary quite a bit though depending on a lot of factors. Some, but not all, of these factors are:
- Type of cancer
- Stage of the cancer
- Grade of the cancer
- Treatment plan
Even though any life insurance broker that is dedicated is going to be able to help you find a policy choosing someone that specializes in cancer risk would be very beneficial. They know the market and the companies that are willing to sell life insurance policies. There are brokers that have a specialty in finding what are called “impaired risks” with cancer falling into the impaired risk category. For some brokers this is all that they do.
Strategies for Cancer Survivors
Make sure that you gather all of your medical records before you even go to apply. Things that you’re going to need are:
- The first pathology report you got
- All medical records
- All treatment records
- More could be requested of you later in the process
It’s important to have all of this information so that the underwriters have the most complete picture of you, your health and your history of cancer. Being honest and up front and having all of your records readily available is going to save you from unnecessary delays in the application process. The insurance company will ask for them so it makes it a lot easier to have them ready.
The common thought sometimes is that the less someone knows about you the better; however, this is a misconception in this case. The less the underwriter knows about you and your past and treatment the more likely they will assume you’re a high risk case and will give you higher premiums or consider you a complete adverse risk and issue you no policy.
You must follow everything that your doctor puts in your plan to the letter. The life insurance company won’t offer a policy if they don’t see the results from your follow-up appointments and know that you’re following the plan set forth by your doctor. Even if the plan works they are going to want to know that you’re following it. If you’re not it doesn’t really matter how good the plan is.
Make sure that you shop around for prices. If you’re looking on your own this is something that is a must; however, finding an insurance broker that specializes in these high risk policies is something that would suit you more. They are going to do the shopping around for you and they really know what to do.
If you’re denied or simply can’t afford the insurance on your own you should look into getting into a group life insurance policy through your employer current, or future if you’re just able to get back to working again.
If you’ve survived your cancer through successful treatment and are once again in good overall health there actually could be several insurance companies that would compete for your business.
