Can Stress Lead To Impotence?
There is no doubt that there stress levels around the world are on the rise. With the hectic and fast paced lives we lead, it is almost impossible to avoid stress. Added to that, global warming, global economic crisis and global unrest make it impossible to lead a life free of stress. In such trying times, stress adds to the problems we have to cope with. And, one big question that looms over most men in the world is whether the stress they are experiencing can lead to decreased libido, or worse, impotence.
The fact of the matter is that stress is a natural and a normal response of the human body. When the mind perceives a threat, you immediately experience a little stress. This stress pumps adrenalin into your blood to energize you for either fight or flight, as the situation may be. Stress also quickens the heart rate as it readies your body and it may also cause mild anger as it readies the mind to take charge. The mind becomes more alert and the senses become more fine-tuned. As you can imagine, such a response was absolutely valid for our ancestors who had to fight wild animals and the tyranny of nature for survival.
However, as time has passed, the problems facing mankind are different. We no longer need to fight or flee from wild animals and we don’t have to kill for our food. The threats faced by the modern man are vastly different from those faced by his ancestors. Nowadays, you are more likely to find a threat to one’s emotional or mental balance, but hardly to one’s survival. But, the response of the body remains the same. What this means that even if you are worried about getting caught for stealing high calorie food from the fridge at night, you will undergo similar response as our ancestors did when they went for a hunt.
What makes this much worse is that we are continually exposed to stress. This means that our body and our mind is constantly trying to ready itself for fight or flight. As you can imagine, being in this state constantly cannot be good for the human body and mind and this constant exposure to stress does result in a number of different physical, psychological and mental problems. People can get high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, ulcers, etc. simply from leading stressed out lives.
So, does stress affect libido? Well, as a matter of fact, libido is easily affected by stress. When the body and the mind are constantly readying themselves for fight or flight, it is impossible to also feel sexual urge of any kind. Similarly, when the exposure to stress is constant, over time it can result in decreased libido.
So, what can be done about it? The best thing to do is to get counseling for dealing with stress. Look up instant stress relief tips as well as long term stress management techniques.
