Can Low Libido Lead to Impotence?

Sexuality | November 18th, 2009

For any man, not being able to satisfy their partner in bed can be very traumatizing. Having sex is a primal need and unable to perform that function can have deep seated psychological impact on the individual. On the other hand, it is perfectly normal for a man to experience low libido in certain circumstances, for instance, after extremely exerting physical activity or after a particularly stressful day. While this is normal and natural, it is uncommon and infrequent. If you experience this on a regular basis, should you start worrying about impotence?

As mentioned earlier, it is perfectly normal for a man to experience loss of libido on certain occasion. But, it does become a serious concern if the problem persists on a regular basis. Here are three main things to watch out for:

  • Inability to sustain an erection for a long enough time to enjoy sex
  • Inability to get the penis to be hard enough to allow penetration
  • Inability to get an erection at all

If you see any of these three symptoms on a regular basis, it is time for you to take some action as these are symptoms of impotence. There are many reasons that lead to impotence and if you can identify which one of them has led to your problem, you will have the key to resolving this issue.

  • Impotence can be brought on by extended exposure to sex. While a stressful day or two may lead to low libido, prolonged stress can lead to impotence. If you think this may be the cause of your problem, you may want to consider changing the pace of your life. This may involve relocation, changing jobs and major changes in lifestyle.
  • Habits like smoking tobacco or doing drugs can also have a huge negative impact on a man’s libido. If these are likely to have caused your problem, then it is best that you quit your habit.
  • Some very strong medications also have the effect of inhibiting libido. If you are taking strong prescription pills, it may help to approach your physician to find replacement pills that do not have such a strong impact on you.

If none of these reasons seem to be at the source of your low libido, then it is highly recommended that you visit your physician for a full body check up. Low libido can be a early warning sign, or a side effect of many major illnesses, whose onset is not obvious, for instance, diabetes, cancer, hypertension. It is best to eliminate these causes as the source of your low libido. Psychological problems can also have an impact on libido. For instance, someone suffering from anxiety, depression, guilt, low self esteem, etc. is likely to develop loss of libido. If you can find no physical causes to your problem, it may so you good to consult a psychologist and attempt to determine if you have any psychological blocks.
