Can Looking Good Save Your Life? Yep

“Suit up and show up.” I forget where I first heard that, but I love it. Clearly, style is like, a serious interest of mine. But as you may know by now, ‘round here, we define style on multi-dimensional terms.

When You’re Feeling Down, Dress Up.

Nothing like a great suit to soothe the Monday blues. Or a crisp new shirt to remind you how good it feels to feel good. Appearances run deep, so making an effort to look good can be profoundly effectual.

When You’re Climbing A Mountain, Pack Your Razor

What can a mountain climber teach you about looking good? Plenty. I once had the privilege of hearing Laurie Skreslit speak. Skreslit was the first Canadian male to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He spoke of the mind over matter dynamics, the wisdom of the Sherpas, the necessity of selflessness.

What struck me about his amazing story was something so simply profound: in part, this world class mountain climber accredited his success to the simple act of shaving everyday. Yep. Shaving. Now, personal hygiene on the side of a sub-zero blustering mountain in thinning oxygen is no small feat. But every morning (and the expedition took many weeks,) Skreslet crawled out of his icicle-laden tent, unpacked his razor, melted snow into warm water, and shaved his (very handsome) face.

Why the hell bother?, you may be wondering? It kept him grounded and it sent a clear message. The simple ritual helped him fight the depression that the hardship brought. It gave him something predictable to rely on. It made it clear to the team that he was a committed leader – committed to rising above the conditions in every way possible. Success is often in the details.

So when I’m feeling less than marvelous and I’d just like to wear my jammies to a business meeting, I think of Skreslet boling his damned snow and being stubble-free on Mount Everest. And then I pull out my push-up bra and best wrap sweater. It works every time.
