Money, Tools for budgeting, Wealth | March 4th, 2010

The way people live and the things they buy really show what kind of person they are in terms of their spending habits and what they find important. Many people have money problems and turn to budget cuts that they just cannot follow to try to cure their financial woes. Cutting your budget is a great way to save money as there are many ways to cut living expenses. Firstly, you must formulate a budget and include all of the aspects of your daily spending from that coffee at Starbucks in the morning to the pack of cigarettes you buy when your spouse in not looking. Once all of your spending habits are on the screen, you can look for areas to cut that will result in a savings windfall or at least a few bucks to put away for your impending retirement.
Spreadsheet programs are perfect for creating and manipulating a budget to see where you can make cuts to either save or make sure you can make ends meet every month. After you have made the sufficient changes, you can look at your accomplishments and know that you will be OK. By setting it up for a few months in advance as well, you will feel good knowing that your finances are taken care of for the future. Every change you do make will be reflected in your balance, so you can also see what eliminating certain expenses will do to your financial well-being. By removing those pay channels, will you be able to get by and save even more? This tool makes budgeting a breeze and can change the way you think about your money.
Another great feature you get from using a spreadsheet is that you can see when you will have shortfalls coming up. This way, you can get a payday loan or personal loan from a family member or friend to take care of your bills and other financial obligations during this period. The forecasting aspect of budgeting allows you to empower yourself in regards to your money and overall spending power. Without a budget, it will be hard to know when and if we can afford to buy things and it also alerts us to upcoming due monthly bills. If we create and stick to a budget, we can greatly reduce our stress and eliminate that shocked feeling when our balance is low.
Sure, playing around with your budget in your spreadsheet program can give you an idea of what is happening with your finances, but you must make the hard decisions sometimes and actually cut spending so you don’t see as much red. Red indicates a negative number traditionally and the goal is to cut living expenses so that you only see positive numbers in your balance column. Not only can we cut things out that we do not need, but we can start to shop smart, using coupons and shopping on double coupon days. Also, look for deals online as well as when you are in the store. Simple changes in shopping behavior can make all the difference in the world.
