Budget Planner, Making a Budget That Works

Wealth | February 1st, 2010 No comments

The budget in budget planner has started to be a scary word but it really shouldn’t be. All budget preparation takes is some time and preparation and it is more worth it then you probably realize. You’ll wonder why you haven’t done it sooner.

Building Your Budget

To start with your budget you’re going to want to have a months’ worth of checks. You need to use net pay so you have the actual amounts of money that you’re bringing in. gross totals are just going to throw things off. Also there are fewer steps with our net pay so it will serve you that way as well.

If you’re not already putting some money away for your retirement through a 401k or pension fund you should now figure out how to put at least 5-10% into that. It’s a very important part of the process. If you’re already doing it then you’re a step ahead of the game. If you haven’t you’ll want to put those in and then figure out what you’re net pay is going to be after those are complete and if it takes waiting for another month of paychecks that’s fine. It’s better to be working with good figures.

Adding Your Bills

You’ll want to gather all of your bills and list them out and add up what you’re paying each month for everything. You’re going to want to make sure that you’re itemizing out all of your expenses so you’ll know at a quick glance some of the things that you can eliminate or reduce should you need to.

Determine Cutbacks

Look at your list and make the determination on if there is anything that you can cut back on or modify to free up some additional money.

Final Step

Now that you’ve figured out everywhere that you can have money and the income itself add it all up and subtract your expenses from your net pay so you’ll know what is left. Any remaining income should be considered towards building an emergency fund. If you don’t have any leftover you’ll have to make some cutbacks even more then you already looked at. You can’t be spending out of your means and ever be financially healthy.
