Budget Planner, How to Teach Kids about Budget Management

Budgeting, Money, Wealth | February 1st, 2010 No comments

Creating your budget planner is all about knowing what do with the income that’s coming in. In order to get your kids on the right track with a budget planner and proper budget management it will take teaching them how to effectively distribute their money and even if they should spend 90% of the money they are getting from allowance they will still gain some knowledge of saving and being in control of their financial situation.

Lead By Example

Take your kids with you shopping so you can lead by example on how you’re following your personal budget. If your kid is a little older, say 10, you can give them some of their own money to spend and give them the things that need to be bought and see how they do. Let them make the mistake if they make it and you can use this as a learning experience. If you’re fairly certain they will spend it on the wrong things you can just start small.

Give an Expense

You can teach the importance of money by giving your kid an expense. For instance, if they want a specific magazine subscription rather than straight out giving it to them add the cost to their weekly allowance so they can budget for it and pay for the subscription their self. Even though you’re still paying for it in the end this is a much better way to do so with teaching them the value of putting their money towards something.

Saving For a Goal

If they are looking for a new game system or something else a little bigger use that as a goal for them so they can save a portion of their allowance each week so they can see how saving your money can get you the things that you want from life.

Keep It Age Appropriate

Make sure that you keep it simple. If you have a young child they aren’t going to have a very easy time following something monthly. Instead if you have young children use something weekly. Maybe work as a general list instead of specific categories. As they get older they’ll be able to start to handle the more traditional budget.

Understanding Fixed and Variable Expenses

Help your kids to understand the two main parts of setting up a budget, the fixed and the variable expenses. When you’re going through and setting up the fixed expenses make sure that you put savings into this category for them so they can know the importance of setting aside money towards this every time they receive money.
