Budget Planner, How to Create a Household Budget
Through the use of a budget planner you’ll be able to get a handle on your money and finally creating a household budget and how to stick to it. The following information will give you some of that you’ll need to make that happen.
For the next two months you’ll write down all of the money that you spend. Make sure that you write down everything, even including the money that you throw into the vending machines. There isn’t anything that shouldn’t be tracked.
If you don’t write something down you’re only cheating yourself. This process is to find out what your normal spending habits are so you can know where you need to make some changes in your life and create your budget. You might be surprised where some of your money is going and this tracking procedure is going to give you a real indication.
After you’ve made this list you’re going to break it down into two different categories:
- Fixed expenses
- Variable expenses
Your fixed expenses are going to be things like your rent/mortgage, insurance, car payments and any other reoccurring bill.
Your variable expenses are going to be things like your transportation costs, clothes, entertainment, groceries.
The final thing is going to be creating another miscellaneous category for those expenses that don’t fit into the standard type of fixed or variable column. You’ll also need to list out all of the income sources from all other contributing members of the household.
You’ll allot an amount for the categories and based upon the list that you had created for the last two months and total the categories up. This is going to help you to determine whether or not your expenses are greater or less than your income. If you’re spending more than your making then you’re going to need to take the steps to decrease your expenses. You’ll need to look through all of the categories and make the assessment on where you’re going to be able to either eliminate something or spend less. You could eat at home rather than eating out; clean the house yourself instead of having the maid come, etc…
Once you’re saving some money you’ll want to make sure that you put it into an emergency fund if something out of the ordinary comes into play. Continue to keep track and be honest with yourself and notice when you’re getting off track and make the proper corrections.
