Budget Planner, Considerations for a Household Budget
Creating a budget planner in order to manage your household budget is something that is well worth the time and effort. By creating a household budget you’ll be able to keep all of your expenses in line with the actual amount of money that you have to spend. By using the planner you’ll be able to take a look at your spending habits and notice the areas of your budget that need some trimming or areas that could use a little expansion.
Budgeting really comes down to two of the simplest things:
- How much you make
- How much you spend
With the beginning of actually starting your budget and writing things down some people are completely amazed at the actual amount of money that they spend and what they spend it on. It is actually some of this realization that keeps people from making some of the same damaging choices they had made in the past from just simply not being very aware.
In order to get things off on the right track you need to figure out where your money is going. Spend the first couple of weeks up to a month tracking everything. The ones that stay static you can list out right away. Those will be things like your rent, car payment and even utilities since those won’t fluctuate too much. Less those amounts from your take home pay.
Make sure that you keep all of your receipts and keep a notebook that you write down other things like trips to the vending machine, etc… make sure that you allot time for yourself every night to record all of the expenses down. You want to make sure that you include absolutely everything, from the guitar lessons to the meat that you bought at the grocery store. Include all of the incidentals as well.
You’re going to want to keep a running total of all the money you’re spending and where it’s going so you should create categories for everything like:
- Gifts
- Education
- Food
- Eating out
- Entertainment
After you’ve taken the time to do this you’re going to be able focus on what you can change.
If what you’re buying at the grocery store are things that you need to have you probably should leave that alone but if you’re spending a decent chunk of your monthly income on dining out you should start to consider bringing your lunch with you to work or dining in more during the month. Don’t take away all of your luxuries but limit them to more reasonable amounts and times. Maybe instead of going out for dinner and a movie you could eat before you go out. Or have a nice meal out and pick up a rental and bring it home.
Creation of your budget is helpful if you want to take the opportunity to pay down some of the debts that you have. You can take some of the excess funds and put those towards paying more on your credit cards or another bill and also put a little of it away for an emergency/savings fund. For the most part the purpose and point of the budget planner/planning process is to find out what you’re doing with your money, where it goes and what you can do to bring back under control some of your out of control spending.
After you have your budgets created and know that you’re on the right track don’t become docile, make sure that you go back and revisit it from time to time and make sure that you’re still staying on the right track and if you have any changes that should be put into place.
