Benefits Of Yoga That You Did Not Know About

Healing, Health & Wellness, Yoga | December 16th, 2009 No comments

There is no doubt that the health and fitness industry is all abuzz with the benefits of yoga. Most people know that yoga practice can make their bodies healthier and their minds stronger, but that is all they know about yoga benefits. Yoga benefits go far beyond just making your body and mind healthier and fitter, although it also does that. Let’s explore some yoga benefits that you may not have known about.

Yoga improves our metabolic system dramatically. What this means is that our body is able to absorb as many nutrients as possible from the food we eat. This means that we do not need a large quantity of food to meet our daily dietary requirements. On the other hand, high metabolic rate also means that food gets burnt as energy faster and there are lesser fat deposits. What this means is that yoga can be effectively used to lose weight.

When yoga is practiced by pregnant women, it helps them create more space in the body to accommodate the baby. Prenatal yoga also helps align the mother’s spine and makes it stronger and more flexible. What this means is that she is able to carry the baby in her womb and later in her arms without straining her back. Yoga also ensures that the baby gets adequate nourishment and oxygen. Also, it helps strengthen the mother’s mind and helps her retain her calm and composure in stressful situations. Finally, there is no doubt that the breathing exercises of prenatal yoga help immensely during labor and child birth.

Yoga breathing exercises ensure that our respiratory system works at its full capacity. We may not know it, but we rarely take full, deep breaths. What this means is that our body does not always get all the oxygen it needs. It also means that all the toxic gaseous matter in the body does not get expelled in the process of exhalation. Yoga breathing ensures that we are able to get as much oxygen as possible into our bloodstream and we are able to expel as much toxic waste as possible. This highly oxygenated blood then flows through every part of our body making us feel energetic and revitalized.

Yoga meditation teaches you to be able to contemplate the mind itself as an object bereft of any meanings, thought or emotions. For this, you will need to get rid of all distracting day dreams, fantasies, concerns, worries and stress from your mind. You will find that this is highly relaxing. Our mind works non-stop, whether we are asleep or awake. This gives the mind a much needed rest and the mind re-emerges with renewed strength and power. You will find your mental abilities increase manifold. Your attention span will increase and you will be able to focus better. You will be able to get your mind under control easily when faced with highly stressful situations and stay calm and composed in the face of adversity.
