The human soul is hungry for beauty…

When we were creating the Style Statement book, I had this quote with me at all times. It was a deep affirmation of our intention and belief that yes! beauty can change the world.

BeautyThe human soul is hungry for beauty; we seek it everywhere — in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion, and in ourselves.
When we experience the Beautiful, there is a wonderful sense of homecoming; we feel fully alive. Our lives become illuminated and we come to glimpse behind the shudder of appearances, the sure form of things.

Beauty is the true priestess of individuation. But our times are dominated by anxiety and by what is vulgar, coarse, and artificial. Were Beauty to awaken in the fields of politics, religion, planning, discourse, and seeing, our world would heal and fresh wells of hope would refresh us.
- John O’Donohue, Beauty: The Invisible Embrace

It was sad thing to hear that O’Donohue passed away this year. I was intending to go to his workshop on Hollyhock this summer. John was, as his friend, poet David Whyte describes him, “a love-letter to humanity.” Carrie and I listen to his CD set on Beauty in the studio sometimes. We sigh and coo over his every glorious word. The very notion of beauty’s power as he describes it is healing. The embrace of it would be revolutionary.
