Authenticity: You can’t please everyone

Spirituality | May 27th, 2008 No comments

Seems some folks think that Oprah’s recent dip in TV ratings is due to her a) endorsement of Obama (offensive to Republicans and Hilary fans) and, b) her support of Eckhart Tolle and his book A New Earth (it’s contrary to traditonal Christian doctrine.)

From the May 26.08 New York Times, A Few Tremors in Oprahland:

The average audience for The Oprah Winfrey Show has fallen nearly seven percent this year; some of her latest book and product picks have attracted criticism from longtime fans; and her endorsement of Barack Obama appears to have alienated some of the middle-aged white women who make up the bulk of her TV audience.

Well, hell. You can’t please everyone.

The article closes with this quote from Discovery Communications Chief Exec, David Zaslav:

“Oprah is a truly authentic personality, and she says what she thinks and what she believes in,” he said. “That is part of her authentic charm.”

I’d much prefer to see and hear real opinions from people – be it Oprah or Marilyn Manson, than watered-downed pandering.

Authenticity takes risks. Sincerity chooses to shine — regardless of the ratings.
