Asbestos Encapsulation, Explanation and Understanding

Wellness | December 16th, 2009

Asbestos encapsulation is the process of actually sealing asbestos within a “protective” shell.

Asbestos itself is a natural tough mineral and when it’s inhaled it’s also a very toxic one. It was used in mass starting back in the later 19th century since it was very heat resistant. The ability to use asbestos as a material for construction has been forbidden in almost every country.

There are builders that will use the process of asbestos encapsulation which is done for the reason that the removal of asbestos in some buildings is a virtual impossibility. The goal from this is being able to contain all of the toxic fumes and thus avoiding the complete demolition of the building.

Health Risks

Absolutely any exposure when it comes to asbestos is something that is a risk to your health. There is direct lineage between asbestos and:

  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Fatal asbestos disease
  • Gastric cancer
  • Emphysema

The thing with asbestos compared to some other toxins is that even a very small amount/level can be just as harmful as a high amount/level. This is the reason why the substance was banned and the subsequent urgings to have the asbestos contained right away.

Cost Effectiveness

Using asbestos encapsulation is going to be a lot easier on the pocketbook than having the asbestos removed completely. The encapsulation would be a lot less risky in terms of having asbestos hit the air and is in fact the recommended course of action. If you do decide that this is the route you’re going to take don’t do so without a professional, you literally could kill yourself if you don’t.

Capsule Effectiveness

Common sense would suggest that it’s not safe to just encapsulate the asbestos; however, that is a misconception for the reason that when it’s done correctly it’s actually a very safe method.

With that said though if there are any pipes or any other material that contain asbestos and those pipes or materials are not in an excellent state they should not be maintained. They should be removed immediately and done so by experts in asbestos removal.

You’ll find that you can do encapsulation yourself as there are products out there for the retail consumer; however, this is in no way recommended. This is not something you want to try to save the extra dollar on.

If the toxin isn’t contained exactly correct then the toxin is going to seep in the air. Set aside the money and hire a professional, there is no room to regret it later.
