Aromatherapy Treatments for the Winter Season

Wellness | December 12th, 2008 by Monika Joslin

I know there are so many products out there and I hardly want to add to the already overloaded list of “things to buy” in this age of crazy consumerism. At the same time, I love it when products combine natural remedies in oh-so-cool delivery systems:

Wild Prairie Lotion Bars

I am one of the pastiest people you will ever meet. In fact, I’m so white that in the winter months I start to resemble one of those drawings from Gray’s Anatomy (get that picture of McDreamy out of your head – I’m talking about the medical reference book here, not the TV show!). A secondary challenge to my glow-in-the-dark whiteness is seriously dry skin and as the winter months approach, I start to scratch myself silly as the dry patches appear.

I was thrilled to find Wild Prairie’s Lotion Bars with essential oils. These nifty little bars are packaged like a deodorant stick and include ingredients like beeswax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E and essential oil. They melt as you apply them, and provide a great moisturizing barrier for those trouble spots like feet, elbows, hands (or the front of your shins if you’re like me). They come in a range of beautiful scents and two sizes (including a cute purse size stick). My personal favorites are the Lavender and Green Tea & Hemp.

Naturopatch Body Patches

Now for the “cranky and sore” fixes. The magic of aromatherapy is not only in the scent and its effect via the olfactory and limbic system, but also in the size of the molecules which can penetrate all of the cells in the human body. The part that is often a little more challenging is the delivery, often through carrier oils, which can be messy and not very convenient.

Enter the Naturopatch. These super-convenient patches are the perfect way to get your dose of essential oils in a neat and efficient way. And being the sucker for packaging that I am, I love the little tins they come in which make them easy to tote around. The Arnica blend is great for relieving aches and pains, and the Bergamot patch is an excellent chill-out fix for daily stress.

Essential Oils

There’s nothing like a nose-full of chemicals to make me feel all happy and fresh! Not. A lot of air fresheners are full of phthalates and have absolutely no benefit whatsoever (aside from masking the scent of the lingering effects from last night’s Mexican dinner). In fact, they can actually be harmful to your health, not to mention a leading cause in the death of pets. Why not scent your home with essential oils that are beneficial to your health and emotional wellbeing?

Invest in a few bottles of oils and create over a year’s worth of room spritzes and bath salts. It’s simple, better for you and far more economical in the long run (and they make great gifts for the holidays too!). Here’s one of my favorite room sprays from Chrissie Wildwood’s book, The Encyclopedia of Aromatherapy:

Sunbeam
5 drops Lemon
5 drops Bergamot
3 drops Petitgrain
3 drops Geranium

Fill a small house plant mister bottle with 125 ml of water and add the essential oils above. Shake well before using each time, to disperse the oils. Spray liberally, breathe deeply and enjoy!
