Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese treatment which has been existent for centuries. It has only recently become popular in the West and a lot of people are turning to it to cure a lot of problems. It is widely accepted as it is not an invasive procedure and there are no side effects. The healing time is also very less with acupuncture. It is based on balancing the energy flow in the body. Acupuncture believes that illness is caused when there an imbalance in the flow of energy.

Some of the most common problems treated using acupuncture includes back ache, depression, etc. It is a great form of pain relief. As the picture of needles entering your body can scare your, here is a brief explanation of what happens. When you go to an acupuncture clinic, you will be given a standard physical examination following which the area that needs to be treated will be checked. You will be asked about your previous medical history as well so it will help if you have it along with you.

You will need more than one visit to the acupuncturist to see the results. The acupuncturist will use very thing strong needles and insert them at certain points. These points are found along pathways and there are about two thousand such points along fourteen pathways. Acupuncture clinic is also approached with problems related to addiction.

Patients in acupuncture treatment can make you a little uncomfortable and you may have wondered if it hurts. Most patients reported no pain or even if there was, it was only like that of a hair being plucked and was very mild. There were a few patients though who did say it was uncomfortable. This could be because of anxiety some new patients experience at the thought of needles piercing them.

Some patients have experienced dizziness, bleeding and problems because of non-sterilized needles. This is only because they had seen a poorly qualified acupuncturist. When you go to a clinic for treatment make sure the acupuncturist is well qualified and check for certification. Some can see immediate relief while others will need more sessions.

Western interpretation is that the needles stimulate natural spots that release natural pain killers. The activation could be of the nerves or muscles and other connective tissue.  It also increases blood flow which helps the body to heal in a natural way. There are standards for the needles used for acupuncture and in US they have to be single use needles.

As you will probably feel safe sticking to one expert, choose well. Ask people who have been to these clinics and make sure you choose the best. Visit the clinic before your first session and check if it is clean and sanitary. This is a very useful alternative medicine which does not burden you system with drugs. It has a long standing record of being effective. It is even used to relieve cancer patients of pain involved in chemotherapy.
