Advantages of Green building materials

Inspiration | December 13th, 2009

More and more people are working towards tackling global warming once and for all, and thank goodness there is some tangible progress. Erecting structures using green building materials is not only beneficial to your health but also to the environment. Due to the wide availability of green building materials, there is no limitation to having that dream home you have always wanted. These materials ensure that sustainability is achieved not only for the present day people but for future generations to come.

Basically, green building materials represent non-toxic and natural building materials that are safe to use, are sustainable, and are friendly to the environment. A great example is using bamboo flooring instead of the normal hardwood flooring that is commonly used. Bamboo in itself is a durable material; it is highly resistant to denting as long as you give it the right care and maintenance.

Thanks to its environmental qualities, bamboo gives consumers the chance to improve the beauty of their homes in a sustainable manner. Note that bamboo is a hardy type of plant that has an ability to regenerate in a year or even less. This is to say that you can cut down a bamboo and still have it grow the next year, but an oak tree cut down may be the last thing ever seen. Sustainable building, even when using green building materials, entails re-growing the cut down bamboo plantations in a responsible manner whereby a single planting can supply all sustainable cities with high quality building materials for a long time.

The other way one can go green without having to cut down a tree is to use Cork i.e. the bark of the cork oak tree. Note that the bark is only peeled off and the tree is not cut and in a span of 9 years, it will re-grow again and the chain goes on. This will not in any way kill the tree and as such will not contribute to deforestation. Perhaps the greatest benefit of using cork is that it is a known natural fire retardant.

On the other hand, and of equal importance to note is that radiant floor heating should also be part of sustainable building which many sustainable cities can use. There are two main types of radiant floor heating systems i.e. hydronic and electric. Hydronic systems create heat by use of hot water pushed on plastic tubes well fitted beneath the floor. Electric radiant heating systems on the other hand will warm a sustainable building electrically from underneath the flooring. This system disperses the heat preserved on the floor to create the much needed heat in a sustainable manner.

If you want to save not only energy but also money, you should equally consider insulating your sustainable building using 100% pure recycled materials. Green building materials for insulation conserve energy, puts little load on the landfills, and what is more, it needs considerably very little energy to manufacture it. There you have it, yous green building materials are not only eco-friendly but also affordable and helps cut costs in the end.
