A Yoga Course Can Change Your Life

Health & Wellness | December 18th, 2009

Have you been thinking of taking up a yoga course but can’t be sure what you benefit you will get from it? You are not alone. There is a whole barrage of information available on the benefits of yoga, but with so much information overload, people are hard pressed to identify the exact benefits of yoga they want to derive for themselves. Or rather, they cannot see what a yoga course can do for them in their lives. More often than not, this is the main impediment in their learning yoga or practicing yoga regularly.

The main principle of Yoga is mind body spirit equilibrium. When the mind body spirit of a person is in harmony, it becomes possible for that person to contemplate universal oneness and be one with the universe. However, it takes years and years of rigorous yoga practice to reach this stage of self actualization. Yogis in India devote their entire lives to yoga practice, renouncing normal lives in order to achieve enlightenment. But, such renouncement and devotion to yoga practice is not for everyone.

That does not mean that it is not possible for everyone to benefit from yoga practice. Each person can gain a number of benefits from practicing yoga regularly. However, what one is able to derive from yoga depends upon what one is looking for in the first place.

Yoga was exposed to the west merely a few decades ago and it is still nascent in its exploration of all the benefits yoga can provide. Unfortunately, many people in the west tend to view yoga as an exercise routine of a form of Indian calisthenics they can use to lose weight and stay in shape. While this is true, it is the most basic and rudimentary advantage one can get from yoga practice.

For other people, yoga is a way to relax the body as well as the mind. They are aware of the therapeutic effects of yoga, pranayama (yoga breathing) and meditation. They use yoga as a medium to achieve certain goals, whether they are stress relief or pain relief from arthritis or relief from the condition of high blood pressure. While it is true that yoga is immensely beneficial as an alternative therapy and can be used to treat or prevent a number of physical and psychological ailments, it is not the only purpose of yoga.

There is a lot to be gained from yoga other than physical and mental health. Yoga is not just a therapy; it is a way of life. The teachings of yoga go well beyond the yoga asanas that are taught in yoga classes and workshops around the world. Yoga, as a way of life, can determine your relationship with yourself and the world. How you relate to yourself and the world can be given by the many tenets of yoga laid down by yoga masters over the last 5000 years. Leading a yoga life can be happy, content and fulfilling.
