I agree - I want the gift to reflect the person's feelings for me. Gift exchanges where you tell the person exactly what you want and they go get it seem completely besides the point!

You said it beautifully, frankly. It seems that we're a lot alike. I'd love to have a friend like you, I found your post so reassuring, it really spoke to me.

Call me shallow, dismissive and overly blunt, but I usually don't like to get gifts from people who don't really know me. Its not necessary for me to have a pile of presents this time of year. Perhaps something lovely from someone very close to me, but mostly, I like Christmas for the celebration: Communication, feasts, and connections. If I do get a gift, I want it to be special, and show how much a person knows and cares about me. It must be something I'll wear, use or treasure. Otherwise, its wasted on me. I like photographs and memories, so long as they're beautiful, stationery that reflects my style (Which will give me great joy!), and things that I'll find beautiful in general: Books, prints, photography... I'm very aesthetic! I also love symbolism, and metaphor. Documentaries, and all sources of inspiration.

Oooh - speaking as a Sacred Design, I love the singing bowl! My favorite thing to do is give something with meaning...it's usually not hard to figure out for friends and family. Another thing I like to do is empower gifts with intent...it can be as simple as thinking of the person as I wrap or make/buy the gift, and holding the space of whatever may come their way, with the interest of the highest good - whatever shape that may take.

As Refined Treasure, gift giving is a about planning, remembering and discovering the desire of my loved ones. Several Christmas's ago I had a photo of my nieces blown up in sepia tones, three feet by four feet. It hangs proudly over my bothers fireplace. Modern like him, and a treasure for my sister in law.

As Organic Transcendence, I want gifts with deep meaning that complement my lifestyle and style and are enduring--I don't like fad items! I want custom or heirloom jewelry pieces that mean something to me--like a silver pendant with my style statement on one side and a favorite quote on the other (by a Transcendentalist author!) or a piece that belonged to my grandmother rather than trendy gemstones in this season's hot color combination. I want eco-and-animal friendly yarns made of soysilk or bamboo fibers that I can use to make amazing knitted clothing that I can then wear for years or give as gifts to others.

And I want to give gifts that signify deep, connected relationships--like homemade scrapbooks celebrating friendships, the sweater my best friend admired three months ago that I bought for her that same day, or the wildly impractical Wii Fit that my 50-something mother really wants but would never buy for herself.
