A Lithgow Palooza: Book Review

A Lithgow Palooza You may know him as Dick Solomon from 3rd Rock From The Sun, but in our home, John Lithgow is the mastermind behind 368 pages of inspirational, educational, motivational, squeal-inducing fun!

A Lithgow Palooza is a treasure trove of creative activities to do with your kids.Lithgow Palooza

This past weekend, the girls and I built a Fairy House out of a shoebox. We dove into the magical world of fairies, and went on a secret treasure hunt as we lurked around our neighbourhood searching for any little thing the fairies might like. We combined branches, twigs, flowers, rocks and a tiny acorn shell to furnish our house. We hid it in a quiet spot in the garden and waited to see what would happen. On Monday morning, a small face appeared at my bed, eyes bright with wonder. “Mummy! Can we go see if the fairies came last night?!” (Of course, they had…and even emptied the acorn bowl).

This book will not only inspire you to create some memories your children will treasure, but allows you to dive deeper into the innocent wonder of childhood.

Make The Most of The Precious Years

At two-years-old, Roo goes along with everything happily. But Nic is six now and she throws herself into it with abandon.  She is on the cusp of fully believing and ….wanting so badly to fully believe. It’s staggering to think how quickly they grow up. And I’m grateful to have found this book to help us make the absolute most of these precious years. So far, we’ve made soup can people, a junk sculpture, a “found items” garden, a fairy house and a sun dial. (I did have to explain why sun dials don’t work very well in Vancouver though…). The next exciting thing on our list is a wooden-spoon puppet show!

Something For Every Age

We can always find something fun to do – be it performances, word play, art, music, science, or history. For each “palooza” there are suggestions rated by age and budget (most can be done cheaply or for free). Many of the activities are accompanied by sidebars for further exploration of the subject: movies, books, and websites you can go to for more learning.

This is the kind of book that will quickly become dog-eared, tattered and exceptionally well-loved.

Thank you, John Lithgow!
